Catalytic isomerization involves the spacial rearrangement of the molecular backbone of organic molecules without changing the chemical formula. This transformation is widely used throughout the chemical industry and is used to move functional groups within the structural formula. For instance, isomerization is useful for transforming cis-alkenes into trans-alkenes or vice versa. Alternatively, isomerization could occur intramolecularly as a rearrangement reaction and could move alkenes into more favourable positions on the molecular backbone.
